Default 100 octane fuel in DC area

Other than Summit Point, does anyone know where one can buy 100 octane fuel in the DC area? Ideally in NOVA. My guess that it is not available....but I thought I would ask.

I heard that while it’s not illegal for gas stations to carry race fuel, it’s illegal for you to bump it directly into your car. I also understand they use a different size nozzle just like back in the leaded gas days.

I saw that there is a gas station on Labarnum in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on">Richmond</st1:City> that carries race fuel, and a gas station at the <ST1lace w:st="on">West Point</ST1lace> exit on 64 that carries race fuel. But obviously you’d need a 5 gal. fuel can to put it in. Also might want to call Old Dominion Race Track in <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1lace w:st="on">Manassas</ST1lace></st1:City>, and Bud’s Creek in MD to see if they have it.

MD stations are a little better. Here’s what I’ve found on the inter webs:<O></O>

The airports sell 100LL. I am not sure how the low lead will work with the engine. My understanding is that the lead acts like a lubricant. I wonder if you can include an additive to help with that. Some airports have self-serve, like Bay Bridge and Tipton/Fort Meade. A lot of the people over here (Kent Island) use 100LL in their boats when taking them out of winterization. Helps boost the octane in the stale fuel.

Be very carefull with aviation 100LL. Low lead is relative and will kill a catalytic converter pdq. The octane rating is also very different to the car octane rating. Can be used in cars without CCs may burn valves I heard in older V8 motors if used much. It is much higher octane than pump 100 Octane

I happen to know he's waiting for a part, so might be on Dorkiphus tonight (not that he'll look at a thread started by Seltzer).

I've been trying to source some 100 Octane to alleviate the bendovering you get at Summit Point's pump. Not many carry it at traditional gas stations. One station near me has been "repairing" its Race Fuel pump for more than 2 years. Another nearby actually has 110 Leaded on a pump. But I've been told lead is not only bad for CC's, but will also make an O2 Sensors go whacky. Plus, unless you have a high-compression motor, 110 octane will actually lose you some power as it burns so slow. Apparently, there's more power to be made with lower octane fuels, but then you're flirting with detonation (because it burns faster), which causes other (more $$$) problems. Modern ignitions can retard timing to counter detonation, which then takes away the power gain. Presumably, the optimum setup is where timing is optimized and the fuel used is properly octaned to not detonate, based upon the compression of the particular motor.
