Default Anyone built an AK?

I gotta figure someone here at DIY central has built an AK from parts - anyone? I'm looking to borrow or rent the jig & tools, or ideally find a local build party.

AK-47 or AK-74 I've taken apart and reassembled both many times but never tried to build one.

47. Construction from parts looks pretty straightforward: bend a sized & punched piece of sheetmetal in a jig, heat treat the holes and rivet the trunions on (It's kind of a unibody gun), add semiuato internals and, Joe's yer uncle, you have a reborn rifle.

There' nothing illegal at all about building your own AK clone, as long as it's not full auto. The only part of the gun subject to FFL/BATF regs. is the receiver. You can buy them at the upcoming gun show at Dulles Expo Ctr. on Feb. 8th. All the rest of the parts you can buy from lots of catalogues and websites. CDNN has a decent catalogue for this stuff. But for what a decent Romanian or Egyptian clone costs fully assembled, you may not save anything by building your own. Better off buying a real beater Chinese SKS and replacing the stock to make it look mean and bad.

All legal, the parts kits never include the original full-auto parts even if I was looking for a trip to Club Fed. Yep, there's no real $ to save but there's a good challenge. Plus I like to exercise a right now and then.

I've had a chinese SKS, it was ok. The ability to strip off the stock finish with plain water was a bonus to making it right.

Someone read this and tell me if it makes sense. Looks like a legal loophole and very cheap way to get into class III.

He's building a semiauto as best I can tell - what's the class III part?

No, he's building a full auto and claims there's a loophole in the pre-86 limit since the receiver came into the US legally under the guise of repair/replace. Still need a tax stamp, but these things are for sale every day on gunbroker.com. At $2k for a full auto receiver and another $1200 for a SIG 556 in semi-auto, this would easily be the cheapest class III gun available and a pretty sweet one at that! I need to talk to my friends at BATF on this. I wonder if a few of these will sneak through and stay legal once the loophole is closed.

If owning a full auto weapon pulls your trigger that’s great. But I’ve shot plenty of full auto weapons and don’t see the point. Sure it’s cool to punch a hole in the side of a building to pop a cap in the bad guys ass but… If you’re lucky the first round is center mass, the next one is in the left shoulder and the rest go down range to fulfill some slob’s destiny to become “collateral damage.”
And even if society as we know it collapses in on itself you still won’t want to blow through all your ammo stash in the first week
But by god if you got the bucks, and need the rush, then go for it.
