Maybe you should buy a $500 data logger and a $1500 car (i.e. don't you have things a little backwards?)

At that price point, look at the Racepak IQ3 [beautiful dash, very flexible four page display, programmable warnings, etc] or G2X. Hard to beat.
The Traqmate is simple, and limited. You'll outgrow it in a heartbeat, which is why you are seeing so many of them being sold.

The Racepak Datalkink II Software can do anything you want. I have not found something that I wanted to do that it could not do.

I'm providing 3 different screen shots below. The first shows how you can create segments for a track (this is the Jefferson Circuit). You can define straights and turns in any way you want. It took a while to figure out how to do this, and I wasted a lot of time, but now that I'm familiar, I can create a new track map in about 5 minutes. This is a lap of my brother driving my 944, in which he spun in turn 1. If you look at the lap zoom on the bottom right of the top picture, you can see the loop he took on turn 1. Studying the data, I couldn't tell why he spun. It wasn't until I linked the data with trackvision, and looked at the video that I saw that he had throttle induced oversteer which is what caused the spin to start. The quick lift off the accelerator, followed by the heavy braking completed the spin.

The two lower shots (it loooks like one shot on my computer) are of Summit Point Main. One shows a comparison of 2 different laps using mph, including exit and entry speeds.

The other shows all laps of a run, showing just times. In this segment compare based on time, lap 8 is the quickest lap. The software automatically highlights in Green the segments that are faster than the corresponding segments of your selected lap. [Sorry for the low quality image, but I guess I had the JPEG compression set too high when I saved the screen shots.]

If you want to play with the software or look at the manuals, it's free to download and use. http://www.racepak.com/Downloads.php If you do want to play around and see how tough the software is too learn, I'd be happy to email you some data files and track maps to play with. Shoot me a PM with your email address if your interested.

ok, so what is the difference between the G2X and IQ3, other than the display. I don't really need gauges, and that is a large price difference.

IQ3 has more advanced LCD display and able to add more channels for whatever you need to monitor. It's cooler and more powerful device.

The G2X is a GPS logger with 2 axis Gs and 12 channel external sensor capacity [in one box] and a separate led-based display [the other boxy thing]. $950

The IQ3 combines the GPS logger with 3 axis Gs and 12 channel external sensor capacity in the same housing as a powerful four page liquid crystal display. $1395

The IQ3 has some important but subtle advances that flow from having everything integrated in one box, but the channels capacity etc and the ripping nice display are the real differences. Both use Racepak's DatalinkII analytics package, which is one of the best at this price point.

Tony, where do you connect (and how many do you have to) the IQ3 to collect throttle, brake, rpm and shift information from the car? For me, having access to the engine through wires seems difficult, am I making this too much of a deal that it should be?

The Racepak sensor architecture is one of its strong points. Everything connects on a single VNet [Can] bus. They have a nice four channel analog setup for around $150 that will get what you want and still have two channels to spare!

Throttle position - Straight from your DME to one analog channel
Brake - two options: Brake switch [on/off] with a wire from the brake switch, or a separate brake pressure sensor in the brake line.
RPM - Pin 6 of your DME
Gear Selected - Both do this directly in the display. They are slightly different in the DatalinkII world, but by the next rev of DLII, both will include Gear in your data.
