| Burning smell....yes again 2017 version

Hi all; Let my 83 911sc with SSI sit for many months and started it up one day. Ran for a while and then smoke poured from the right passenger vent mostly and smelled electrical. Shut everything down and began the internet search for smelly 911's. So here is what I did: 1. Searched for electrical wiring overheating....nothing! 2. Fused all the wires as prescribed in 101 book.......nothing! 3. Replaced all hot air hoses in the flapper valves .......nothing! 4. Checked all motors and fans for heating.......nothing! 5. Replaced alternator for possible overheating......nothing! 6. Torqued the valve covers (turbo type).......nothing! 7. Spent "quality time" under the car on ramps and saw very little oil except for a persistent drip from back of engine onto the right side SSI.........maybe this is it but Im not sure. I hope so because the next move is engine out service. What have I missed? |

Rodent nest perhaps? Suspect it is the oil drip but it only takes 30 seconds or so to check for nests. Run a flex head borescope through the fan and look all over the top of the motor for rodent nests. Many 911s have cooked a cylinder or entire motor due to mice. They often like to set up house on the top of the oil cooler. How long have you driven the car/ run the motor after the smoke? Sometimes accumulated oil takes some time to burn off.

Good idea on a nest. Engine compartment and in the frunk fan are the only SC 'lectrics inline, my initial hunch is debris or oil in the heat exchangers or heater tubes. You could disco the fans and test.

Recall I replaced the alternator so I got a real good look around the entire engine.....except what you can't see until you drop the motor. The motor is pretty clean and it does mitigate with driving. I will spend some more quality time underneath the car to try to trace. What bothers me is that it has more of a burning electrical smell to it even though I read somewhere that burning motor oil can smell electrical also. |

Do all the electrical devices in the back of the car work? Does "it does mitigate with driving" mean you have driven the car for a good number of miles? Does the smell go away after driving a while and then come back after the car has been parked?
