| Non P-car tech question, water pump sealer

Hi all, Dave R. and Dave D. had the chance to see my Buick daily driver blew up the alternator and the water pump, in a short time from each other, last Sunday. I am replacing my water pump and have a question on what to do with the paper/graphite gasket that came with the water pump. I have already removed the old water pump and the old gasket materials from the engine block. The instruction says to "coat gasket with tacky sealer and position on new water pump or engine. NOTE: if using a self curing, silicone type gasket sealer from a tube, do not apply excessive amount". Question, what is the "tacky sealer" the instruction is referring to, where can I get some, and how do I use it?. Thanks for all your help. Andy

Otherwise known as Gorilla snot. Yellow stuff, think it's a 3m product, I've had the same tube for at least 5 yrs. I would just put a little silicone on and be done.

put a little silicon on both sides of the gasket or on the metal mating surfaces of the engine and the water pump and then throw away the the paper gasket?. Andy

Might be a good idea to forget silicon for that application. Ideal material is Permatex Hylomar, which is formulated for high temp water/air seal of paper-based gaskets. The nice thing is that it never goes hard, so its a snap to remove the part next time. http://www.neverseezproducts.com/gasketseal.htm The white tube package is in most decent auto parts stores. Fairfax Auto Parts was where I found it.

Pretty funny actually (well if your name isn’t Andy ).Transverse mounted engine’s alternator coughed up its rear bearing but not before seizing up enough for the serpentine belt to loosen up the water pump’s pressed on pulley. It flew off on start after replacing alt. Not enough room to swing a BFH (Doubles D’s suggestion) to reinstall. AAA was final solution for night.

Look/ask for something called 'gasket maker' at the auto parts store. There are several brands available.

I think the directions are referring to an old product also called gasket shellac. It came in a bottle with a brush attached to the lid and you paint it on the gasket on both sides. It largely serves to hold the gasket in place during installation. If you can be sure to get the part installed without damaging or crimping the paper gasket, you really don't need to use it. If you get a fold in your gasket during installation, you'll wish you did. Haven't seen the stuff in years.

I've used Permetex "Form a Gesget Sealant" on waterpumps on BMW2002, Izuzu Trooper, Toyota Corolla.. and no problems [with leakqage]. Ther are numerous good products that work. Go to any decent auto parts store > tell them that you are replacing a water pump > and they can provide you an acceptable gasget sealer

Thanks guys, I tried to find the Permatex Hylomar compound at local parts store but they don't carry it. I ended up using Permatex waterpump and thermostat silicon material and it seems to hold up just fine, after 24 hrs cure time. The car went through a few hot cycles with no leaks. Thanks again for all your help. Andy

Congrats for getting it fixed and back on the road! Thankfully nothing else fell off once you replaced the water pump
