Default 944 neighbor needs help

My neighbor Paul has an 84 or 85 944 NA that won't start.

It cranks

He replaced the battery, the coil and the fuel lines. He thinks it must be electrical. He last drove it months ago. It rarely comes out of the garage.

Is there a common reason specific to 44's for this. Kind of like the DME relay in a 911?

Any thing he should try to narrow it down? He's handier than me.

All assistance is appreciated.

DME Relay does go bad. If memory serves, it is harder to get to on the early cars than the late ones.

He replaced the coil, but what about the distributor and rotor? Has he checked for spark beyond the coil? What fuel lines did he replace? There are a lot of them.

There are lots of reasons why a 944 won't start.

Here are 944 starting problems that I have seen:

1. crank position sensor worked its way loose/bad connection
2. CPU had bad connection (wiggled and plugged in harness)
3. DME Relay

First.....He should check to make sure he's getting spark at the spark plugs using a tester.
That's an easy way to eliminate "spark" as a problem.

If the DME relay is bad, then the fuel pump won't come on and the engine won't get any fuel.
On Clarks Garage, there is a procedure for making a jumper that will bypass the DME relay.
It's easy to make and worth keeping in the glove box, just in case. If that works, and the car
starts, then the DME relay is probably bad.

Put it on CL for $500?

Sounds like he went replacing parts.. were they warranted or just tried as being the culprit. Certainly need to check fuel rail for pressure and plugs for spark. DME relay is pretty cheap iirc and a spare should always be on hand.

It wasn't mentioned, but when parked several months ago did it work?

Good info. I'll pass this along.

It did run a few months ago.

Thanks

Check the wires on the cap. It won't run if they are hooked up in the wrong order.
