Default Looking for a pair of low, comfortable seats

I'm resisting temptation to cut the sunroof assembly out of my '80 SC. So....

I may take my own advise and the advise of others and find a pair of seats that allow a very low mounting position.

Currently my top seat choice is the Nürburgring seats model 914 available from Stefan at GTS-classics.com.
http://www.gts-classics.com/seats.html

Second in line is the Monte Carlo seats model 914R from the same supplier.

Both of the seats above can be mounted between the stock SC seat rails - which is key. The seats use a custom low mount that bolts to the stock rails. Niiiiice.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...ighlight=seats

Now I have 2 questions:

1. Do any of you know of aftermarket seats that are similar to either seat above that also allow very low mounting but are cheaper?

2. Do any of you have either of the 2 seats listed above installed in your car?

Thanks for the help,

FWIW, I dont think those seats will fit inside SC seat rails. I think the longhood cars had rails that were much further apart. IIRC, a sparco evo wont go between the SC seat rails and its about as skinny as they come. I had to cut my rails out. Once you do that, anything will fit.

I was looking to put a set of the Lemans or Rallye seats in the 914, but a couple of things have stopped me so far:
1) I can't find anyone local who has them (and Im not shelling out $1500 for a pair of seats I've never put my butt in)
2) The seat bottom has to be thicker than a fiberglass race shell (and I need every inch in the 914)
3) The webbing (even though safety approved) cant be as safe as a race shell
4) The sides of the Lemans/ring seats come up very high and dont have the lap belt pass thoughs for a 5/6-pt harness (the rallye is the only one w/ holes). Im becoming more convinced that the lap belt wount actually hold you in the seat safely if youre skinny (and I am).

If you buy one, I want to see it!!

I'll verify with Stefan that the seats will fit between the rails. In the Pelican link he mentions the N'ring seat base is 14" wide.
http://www.gts-classics.com/weight-dimensions.html

Here's a good link for seats that fit in a Miata. If the fit a Miata they'll fit a SC!

Scott:

Have you sat / test driven the N'ring seats?

Have them in a 2.0L in CT and have driven several enduros / sprint races with them. Nowhere near as supportive as FG race shell and you certainly don't feel as controlled in your upper body as a FG race shell. Mounting wasn't an issue in a LH.

Don't get me wrong ... I like them a lot and am looking at sticking a pair in my '76 targa and getting rid of the DADs I have in there now.

Jase,

I have not sat in them let alone test driven in them. Hmm....I wonder where I could do that!

My intended use for whatever seats I purchase are 80% street, 10% auto-x, 10% DE events. Good support is needed but not as much as a fiberglass shell.

Thanks for the info,

It turns out the width between my stock seat rails is ~14 1/4". So the N'ring 14" seat base will fit between the stock rails but the bolsters will quickly interfear with the stock rails. So I'm thinking the N'ring base could sit maybe 1/2" below the stock rails. This might not be low enough.

I've been wondering for awhile how Miata seat measurements compare to my SC. Well...here are some pics.

If I cut the SC rails off the Miata seat could probably sit on the floor. Cutting the rails off opens up alot of options of aftermarket seats (duh).

So that Miata link can be useful for 911 seat sizes. Oh yeah...the pics below are from my targa parts car, not the SC!

Scott, keep us posted on your progress. I'm contemplating doing something similar with my SC, as the stock seats are positioned pretty high up.

Will do.

I'm 99% sure stock Miata seats will fit within SC/Carrera frame rails with stock seat rails removed. I'm thinking I can get 3+ inches of increased head room in my SC by using a Miata-sized seat.

Check out the pics below. With the Miata seats sitting on Carrera seat rails the tops of the SC driver and Miata passenger seat were about level. With the Miata seat on the floor look at the difference in seat back heights!

Rick,

I just took the passenger seat out. The driver's seat is still installed....so...it's not a big deal, right?!!

The tan seat is going back in the Miata tomorrow. I'm picking up a pair of black Miata seats for 'testing purposes' locally for $45.
