Default ABS plastic (or what's the right stuff) for a Dino project

I'm thinking about blocking the airflow around the sides of my Carrera oil cooler and funneling the air from under the car up to the cooler. Remember that I still have my right side battery box. One idea I was toying with is using some type of plastic (lightweight) material that I can cut to fit and form using a heat gun. Is this nuts? Where can I find this stuff?

Sometime in the future, I may also want to put a piece along the bottom of my S spoiler to help keep the nose down. This is still a gleam in my eye, not something I've actually thought about for more than a minute or so. 8)

Not nuts at all I have instaled a bunch for folks. Reed plastic in Rockvill MD is one place to get thermoformable sheet goods. I have some black sheet stock that I might swap for some green paper.

You can also use the thin lexan that Home Depot sells. It is polycarbonate and will only thermal form at high temps and you need to have experence with thermal forming as it burns, bubbles and melts at a temp very close to the form temp. It is easy to make into things using wood cutting tools if you do not plan to form it. I might not use air from under or from low to the ground as that is where all the road crud is. There are lots of ways to get more air through the cooler.

Jim,

Why not sell the S splitter and add an AIR / GT-Racing / Getty Design / MA Shaw 2.7RS one with a cutout?

Of course this will require getting another oil cooler (Mocal front cooler) and simply plumb in line to / from the carerra fender one. This way you'll be ready for the 3.2 / 3.6 upgrade next year.

Your wallet is already open on the RS spec motor ....

I'll second Reed Plastics.
When you go there you'll find tons of stuff they have leftover from projects they sell by the pound. You get to feel and touch it all. I always end up buying stuff Tha "I'll need sometime in the future.)
They also sell resins and glass as well.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, even the evil ones from our resident tub driver. Kurt, I'll have to look in my ever thinning wallet to see if there's any of that green paper left. I may also go dumpster diving at Reed's. 8)

There is some middle ground if you're not shooting for the stars with a 3.6.

I added a carrera cooler to my '72, and in the process removed the right side battery box. It has been sealed up and there's direct airflow from the right side horn grill. I've -never- had an oil temp problem with my hopped up 2.4-T motor. I've seen 210 on the hottest days at the track.

The downside is you'll have to convert to a single battery.

I considered a front mount oil cooler with RS style bumper, but heard that long hood cars are complicated because there's not a lot of space behind the cooler to allow for airflow. It requires hacking up the front end...

Josh, I already have a single battery (the left one), but cutting the battry box is just one step closer to rolled fender lips, Carrera flares, fully gutted interior and ...

I'm not sure I'm in that deep yet.

Jim

I've heard of using a cheap home depot plastic trashcan as 'stock' for a your purpose as well. That would be the real Dorki solution.

Excellent! I just happen to have two of those babies. Maybe time for one to make a sacrifice for the team. 8)
