Default Maco paint job

I want to get an inexpensive paint job. Maco will give me their top of the line paint service for just under $2k. I want to have the front and rear glass taken out and a couple small rust spots repaired (cut and welded). I trust them to do a good enough paint job...don't need a garage queen. Should I trust them to repair the rust and do the glass removal / install?

Thanks,

Chris

Which Maaco are you talking about? I had the one in Merrifield do my 944 back in 2002 and have been happy with the results. Yeah, it has issues but I can live with it.

I can't comment on the glass removal because I completely stripped the car myself but left the windshield and hatch in place. They did some dent filling which didn't come out all that well but they may have someone else in there at this point. My recommendation is to have them show you some of their welding repairs and see how it looks.

You're welcome to come and look at my car and I can give you some really detailed feedback on what I liked and didn't like about their work. I'm in Sterling which isn't too far from you.

Thanks Brian,

I got a quote from the one in Manassas. Had some cars they just finished that looked great. They are going to strip the hood as it has tons of rock chips and fill a few small dings. I doubt they have done an old Porsche like mine and don't know if there is anything unusual in getting the glass in and out without f-ing up the chrome. Just wondering what the experiences have been.

I would recommend just taking off as much of the stuff yourself as you can. My approach was that anything that was taped could be a potential source of either overspray or a future paint flake. As far as your windows go, well, I can't help you there!

My only real warnings is that their paint is thinner and more prone to things like stone chips and the like. I'm not sure how well it'll age if parked outside but mine is in the garage so there hasn't been any real aging issues. They suggested that I wetsand my car when it was done but I chose not to because of things going on at the time but that may have gone a long way towards making the paint that much nicer.

My plan was to take off as much as I could with out going overboard (lights, mirrors, lenses, Porsche letters, etc.). I am thinking the two stage paint. Couple coats of Guards Red (Or Baja Red....original but a bit orange) an then clear coat. Contemplating taking out the glass my self but have never done it so they should be better qualified? Ditto for the rust repair.

Talk to the guy doing the painting. They often do work on the side. Guy in the Merrifield shop used to do work for some of the indes and was very good. Sorry, don’t remember his name.

I understand not wanting to spend tons of money on an old car. But come on it’s a long hood, in reasonably good shape! Don’t screw it up (and yourself) by trying to low ball the job and quality just to save a few bucks

Don't have them do the repairs or glass removal. Both are too specialized for any of them that I've seen. Also 2k is a lot for a Maaco job.

Quote was $1700 from Maco and a fairly long list of what they would do. I drive this car every day it's not raining or roads too salty. I have three young kids and I don't want to stress if they scratch it as is inevitable. Any paint job is better then what I have now. So it does not need to be perfect.

I sent Scott an e-mail. Thanks for the lead John. Would be nice if I could have one person do everything with similar experience.

Keifer's friend in Richmond was very reasonably-priced, and has a paint booth at his home. He did a race-car pain on my race-car, and I was very happy. He also did body work. The only issue is make certain you discuss what you want him to do - my "bolt-on rear fenders" were not what I had hoped for, but discussing only over the phone was MY mistake. Did I mention the price was VERY reasonable.
