VW TDI debacle...

Hey all,

As I'm sure you've all read, VW has admitted to putting in some software in its TDI engine management system from ~2009 to now, which detects when the car is getting an emissions test, and then running a special map which meets emissions standards.

When it isn't on a test, it runs a different map, and produces 10-40x the allowable amount of emissions (primarily NOx).

Given that they face massive fines for this (in the $ billions), as well as additional costs in terms of producing and installing a TDI fix as well as the likely civil lawsuits for things like fraudulent advertising or diminished value...and also given that Porsche is part of VW...I'm curious how badly this will affect Porsche's ability to, say, field motorsports efforts, or design new vehicles.

[NOTE: I'm not interested in starting a flame war over whether emissions standards are good/fair/warranted/non-fattening, etc.]

Thoughts?

Here's a good rundown on this:

My 2 cents is very little. There's enough corporate firewalling in between business units that unless a specific porsche model knowing used the cheat it won't affect them.

This same sort of shenanigans has gone on the video card business as well, and all players have kept themselves afloat. That was for fewer peanuts, and less stakes but they survived. VW OTOH might be spinning off some assets soon to pay the bills...

Obviously emissions tests are simply a money making and bs job creation boon doggle created by the gubment. Now they get a new income tidal wave because of business's need to circumvent the absurd restrictions to compete. The unions will decide how much the company can afford without laying off unionized workers.

Almost forgot the tests are to stop global warming which is another income stream creation!!!!!0ne

Funny they all seem to do this. Just makes it even funnier when people choose this over that because "it's more Green!!!!!11!!!!1111one!!11"

How are they going to convince the owners of those millions of cars to come in for the recall? "Yes, you need this remapping. It might affect your mileage and your enjoyment of driving the car..."

Not might. Will. This is the real issue VAG is facing. The government will hit them as prescribed but only hit them once. Civil will be open-ended and contentious.

Considering GM was only hit with a $900M fine for 124 deaths due to faulty ignition switches, this seems a bit excessive if they are charged anywhere near $18B as a fine for a non safety issue.
