New Truck?

Might be in the market for a new truck next year. Current ’02 F-150 has been a good, reliable hauler. Capable of towing Porsche and trailer well above the legal limit all over the east coast. It’s approaching the end of extended warranty but real reason is son is jumping ship at Ford. He starts with GM on January 2 in “combustion chamber development.” Bought the F-150 with his Ford discount, expect GM has similar arrangement.
What I would like is a smaller pickup, but still a V8 and auto. New F-150s have very high bed liftover. Full size rear seat and doors would be nice too but must still be able to tow 10K lbs.
Strangely enough diesel fuel isn’t readily available near where we live and besides I’m really not a diesel guy anyway. Any experience with the less than full size GM products?
 But then, maybe a low mileage Harley F-150, crew cab. Supercharged V8, 20” wheels baby :)

A friend just got a deal on an '06 quad cab GMC Sierra. It's basically a huge luxury car that can tow and has a 6' bed, but it is quite nice.

I'm not sure about the towing capacity, but his has the smaller V-8 (5.3L I think).

I'm sure a larger engine is available.

I think the only less than full size truck that GMC is the Canyon, which does come in a 4 door version, but its a 5 cylinder. Never heard anything good or bad on it, I don't even know anyone that has one, but I think the only V8 that they are making are in the Fullsize trucks and in the larger SUV's, Yukon Suburban.

I think you'll find that many of the "signature" truck variants give up some towing capacity in their quest for lower stance and better handling. But if its within the budget, I would take a loooong look at Duramax equiped pickups. Stump pullers from the factory, and then you can plug&play something like a Gale Banks Six-Gun kit, which not only ups HP by 100+ and Torque by 200+, but monitors all the engine and tranny vitals to keep it running safe and happy. Duramax deisel backed by Allison 5-speed auto is one of the best towing setups out there. And then when your mileage is nearly 20mpg, you'll be grinning non-stop....

In our situation, we have a 2500 Suburban with the 8.1L gasser. Its an awesome tow vehicle and people hauler, but the mileage sux...11 on average, 9 while towing. Unfortunately, :bang: something about the frame and body clearances prevent the Duramax/Allison from being offered in the Suburban. Our truck is a 2001, just rolled over 100K miles, and I'm delighted at how well its still runs and feels.

Umm, theres no F-150 that can do that... Nothing less than a superduty or GMCs 'HD' lineup will either. Forget it w/ something even smaller than a full-size pickup.

Oh yes the torque those things produce is phenomenal. With some mild tuning, they are in the 800 ft/lb range. You could yank a house off it's foundation with one of those things. And you'll get 20 mpg while towing, what's not to like?? Less maintenance, longer lasting, and higher reliability from a diesel too.

Or you could go for the bling. 20" spinners look sweeeet on a tow vehicle! ;)

2580lb car with full tank of gas, 1520lb trailer with tyres, tools, etc. Considering future rig ;)

WHy not go cool and wierd at the same time and look for (and I know this is a different thread) a diesel powered 4dr LR p-u. It will do all these things. You'll just have to spend half a lifetime looking for one stateside that's FS. Then again, I hate normal, practical things.

Just buy a HD full size p-u and be done with it.
