Talking "Holy Crap!" ALMS Mosport Fact

Anyone catch the ALMS race a Mosport last weekend? We all know that it's a fast track; fastest in NA and at one point last year it was reported to be the second fastest only to Monza (they didn't reference LM) and it's a blast to drive. 10 turns, four of them that even I can take in fourth gear in my RSA, but most require some level of braking before entry.

Brian Till and Calvin Fish were discussing the issues associated with having 4 classes on track and the issue of very high speed disparity. The natural thing is to think about how top speeds relate, but there is a more significant issue: according to Dorsey Schreoder GT cars brake for 8 of the turns, where LMP's only brake for THREE of them!!! Five corners where GT cars are braking from top end and LMP's are flat - Holy Crap!

PS Wicked impact that shortened the race.

I caught the race on Speed (I've been following the season). It was pretty good but a shame they had to call it early due to the GTC wreck. The track looked like a ton of fun.

It was interesting to see that in the last race (Road America I believe, the M3's had the advantage of top end. In Mosport, that was the opposite situation where the Pat Long's Lizard and the Rizi Ferrari plowed past Tommy Milner's BMW. Yes, Milner's tires where a bit older than the other 2 guys but they seemed to make short work of him.

The speed difference in the different classes seemed to make the race very challenging. Even within classes when Durk Muller tried to drive over the GT40. His closing speeds was significantly higher than the GT40. Either he missed his breaking point, had brain fade, she was extremely slow (GT 40 driver) or all of the above.

This season is turning into a nice competitive year with so many makes in GT2 and it's all going to boil down to the petit Le Mans next month. I was surprised that the corvettes weren't more of a factor this year. They showed a lot of promise but it never seemed to culminate for them. I wonder how long the Porsche can remain competitive in a field of V8's in the future.

It was a good race, and Mosport is definitely one of my favourite tracks to drive. Only been there twice but love it.Closing speeds are always a problem in almost every series including some spec series. Even F1 has some dramatic closing speeds

At lunch yesterday the president of ALMS was in Baltimore marketing their support races to be held in conjunction with the Baltimore GP and I was discussing the different classes with him. I dropped this nugget of wisdom and he seemed impressed with the knowledge of the fans. People usually think I am an asshole as soon as I open my mouth. This time it took a little bit longer.

 that's nice, but I'll bet you have not bellied up to the bar with Reinhold Joest and provided racing strategy to Flying Lizard...
